Primer is seeking a Backend Engineer (E3 level) to join its fully remote Engineering team across Poland, South Africa, Hungary, Romania, or Portugal. As part of the Management team, you'll help build and maintain core backend services that power Primer’s unified payment infrastructure. This role involves designing scalable distributed systems, writing clean and testable code, and collaborating across teams to deliver innovative payment solutions. You’ll work with a modern tech stack including Python, Typescript, AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform, and embrace a “you build it, you own it” philosophy with full responsibility for infrastructure, testing, and QA. Responsibilities

• Design and implement core backend services for high-performance distributed systems
• Apply modern development practices such as BDD and TDD
• Write clear, maintainable, and well-tested code
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams in a product-driven environment
• Own key technology decisions and optimize systems for scalability and output
• Conduct code reviews and continuously improve development workflows
• Create detailed internal documentation for all projects

Qualifications

• Proven experience in modern, complex technical environments
• Proficiency in Python preferred, but experience with Java, Golang or other OOP languages is acceptable
• Strong understanding of testing frameworks and writing testable code
• Ability to set goals, define success metrics, and lead sprint planning and ticket refinement
• Comprehensive knowledge of the full development lifecycle including design, development, and deployment
• Self-motivated and autonomous with a strong bias for action
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Experience working in fast-paced environments
