Description

The Data Engineer role at Hollard Insure, based in Parktown, Gauteng, is a permanent position within the Project Athena team, reporting to the Head of Data. This role is centered on designing, developing, and maintaining scalable Big Data Pipelines and data architectures to support optimal data extraction, transformation, and loading across multiple platforms. The engineer will act as a data custodian, ensuring compliance with classification standards and enabling efficient data consumption. The position demands deep technical expertise in Data Engineering, Data Warehouse Design, and advanced analytics, with a strong focus on Azure Data Solutions and programming frameworks such as Python, Spark, and SQL. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust data solutions aligned with architectural guidelines and contribute to the development of a scalable, unified data platform

Responsibilities

• Responsible for building and maintaining Big Data Pipelines
• Ensure data sharing complies with information classification requirements
• Utilize programming skills in Python, Spark, and SQL
• Work with Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Explorer, and Azure Databricks
• Apply technical expertise in Data Engineering and Data Warehouse Design
• Implement modern software engineering concepts and BI tools
• Develop and maintain data architecture across multiple platforms
• Analyze data elements and systems
• Build infrastructure for optimal data extraction, transformation, and loading
• Create, manage, and optimize data pipelines
• Develop data tooling for efficient data consumption
• Design and develop APIs across platforms
• Perform root cause analysis on data and processes
• Understand integration patterns, styles, protocols, and systems
• Collaborate with technology and data teams to deliver viable solutions
• Maintain technical documentation and respond to user queries
• Provide OLAP support and end-user training on reporting cubes

Qualifications

• Matric
• BSc in Computer Science, Data Informatics, Information Technology, or related field
• Cloud Certification is required
• Microsoft AWS Certification
• Deep knowledge of data architectural principles
• Understanding of enterprise architecture and technical roadmaps
• Familiarity with SDLC methodologies, preferably Agile
• Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Integration Services, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Power BI
• Knowledge of Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is advantageous
• Experience with Azure Cloud Services
• Proficiency in Python
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in cloud computing infrastructure including MS Azure and AWS
