Description

The Department of Education is inviting students to apply for the Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme for the 2025 academic year. The bursary funds undergraduate studies towards teaching qualifications, specifically for the following programs: 4-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) specializing in Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase, and Senior and FET Teaching. 4-year Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Care and Education (B.Ed. ECCE) for ECD Grade RR-R. The bursary provides cover for tuition, books, learning materials, accommodation, meals, and a possible allowance for living expenses. Students must reapply each year for continued funding, and renewal is based on academic performance. After graduation, recipients are required to teach in public schools for one year for each year of funding received.

Responsibilities

• Successfully complete your degree and apply for a teaching position in a public school within six months after graduation
• Teach for one year in a public school for each year of bursary funding received

Qualifications

• Must be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID
• Must be 30 years old or younger (if applying for the first time as of 1 October 2024)
• Must be accepted into an approved BED degree program, specializing in two or more priority subject areas (extended programs are not covered)
• Must be accepted to study at a public university in South Africa
• Must have a strong academic record
• Must be willing to teach at any school, as selected by the Provincial Education Department (PED)
• Must be interested in working with young people and ready to face challenges with integrity
• Must not have any other teaching qualifications
• Must not have a criminal record

Application instructions:

• To apply for the Funza Lushaka Bursary, applications must be submitted online via the e-Government Portal. First, visit the portal and register an account by entering your personal details. After registering, log in using your selected username and password. Once logged in, select "Education" from the menu and then choose “Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme” under the Education section. Please note that only online applications will be accepted—hard copy applications will not be considered.
