Description

Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) is offering bursary opportunities for the 2026 academic year to female students from South Africa and other eligible developing countries. The bursary supports all fields of study toward a Certificate, Undergraduate, Postgraduate, or Post Doctorate qualification at selected accredited South African universities. The aim of the grant is to empower women from developing countries to further their education, enhance their careers, and improve the lives of women and children in their communities. The grant provides up to US$7 000 (approximately R126 000), with awards disbursed in February 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain academic performance and remain enrolled for the full duration of the scholarship period
  • Submit required documentation and references
  • Demonstrate commitment to improving the lives of women and children through education, research, or community service

Qualifications

  • Be a South African national or from an eligible MMEG country
  • Have a valid South African study permit if from another eligible country
  • Identify as female
  • Be 25 years or older at the application deadline
  • Be officially enrolled in-person at one of the listed South African universities
  • Be pursuing full-time or part-time studies (minimum two courses per term)
  • Be enrolled for at least one more term after receiving the bursary (between Jan–Jul 2026)
  • Plan to graduate no more than three years after receiving the bursary
  • Not be related to any IMF, World Bank Group, Inter-American Development Bank staff/retiree, or MMEG board member

Proof of registration (not just an acceptance letter). Latest academic transcripts and reports. Personal story, study details, and future goals. Financial statement outlining funding plan and expenses in Rand. Thesis summary or academic study relevance to future goals. Two reference letters (one academic, one character; not from family). References must include email addresses for verification and contact by Embark Online.
